SYNOPSIS:
A real estate agent and his client, an Asian home buyer, drive from a suburban neighborhood to an affluent area of the city centre to view a house for sale. Over the course of their car journey they have a meandering dialogue about personal history, life experiences, and views on property and social status that subtly reveal their cultural beliefs and preconceptions.
CHARACTER BIOS:
1. [REAL ESTATE AGENT] [GENDER: MALE OR FEMALE] [RACE: CAUCASIAN] [AGE: 30-45]
The real estate agent is a sociable and successful middle-class professional. He/she possesses a confident, liberal view of the world. He/she is well-travelled and is always prepared to share personal anecdotes about his or her experiences.
2. [PROSPECTIVE HOMEBUYER] [GENDER: MALE] [ETHNICITY: CHINESE] [AGE: 30-40]
The prospective homebuyer is thirty-something Chinese-Canadian documentary film-maker looking to move from the suburbs to the city. He is contemplative and has a generally skeptical view of the world.
PRODUCTION INFO:
If All You Have is a Hammer, Everything Looks Like a Nail is video installation with three synchronized projections displayed as a triptych. Footage of the real estate agent/driver appears on the left projection, the homebuyer/passenger appears on the right, and a continuous shot of the road ahead is presented in the central projection. The footage of the conversation between the driver and the passenger are intercut occasionally with images depicting the mental impressions of the subjects arising in their conversation, sometimes accurately and at other times as a misinterpretation. The work is a playful adaptation of a well-known 1982 film work by the Toronto artist John Massey entitled As the Hammer Strikes.
If All You Have is a Hammer, Everything Looks Like a Nail will premiere as an exhibition at Trinity Square Video, an artist-run gallery and video production/post-production organization in Toronto as part of the exhibition programming of the 2014 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. The exhibition will run from 12 November through 12 December 2014. If All You Have is a Hammer, Everything Looks Like a Nail was originally developed as a commission for Gendai Gallery for its “Model Minority” program, a roving series of screenings, workshops, research, and commissions investigating the reality of cultural diversity in Canada today.
